WSJL events - 2006/2007

58th Annual Wisconsin Institute of Judaism - August 9-12, 2007

Institute Hazzan Ramon Tasat of Shalshelet spoke about Jewish music and Professor Emeritus Norman Roth of UW-Madison discussed the Golden Age of Spain at the Perlstein Resort & Conference Center in Lake Delton, Wisconsin.

Particpants attended lectures and musical performances in a beautiful resort setting in the Wisconsin Dells, with pool, fully equipped gym, boats, and tennis courts.


WSJL Annual Meeting - June 24, 2007

Amster Ellen Amster PhD, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, spoke at Cardinal Stritch University. Her topic was "Saints, Sultans, and Saffron: the History and Culture of North African Jews." Guest enjoyed an authentic Moroccan luncheon.


Hazzan Ramón Tasat and Dr. Norma Brooks - March 2007

Hazzan Ramón Tasat and Dr. Norma Brooks, founders of Shalshelet - the Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music, came to Milwaukee to present a musical exploration of new Jewish liturgy, entitled Sha'arei Tefila - Gates of Prayer.

Tasat Dr. Brooks sang a variety of recently composed liturgical songs, with Hazzan Tasat accompanying her on guitar.
Many of the songs performed and discussed at the concert were written for previous Shalshelet festivals. The audience also heard recordings of several songs from previous Festivals.

This was the first of several planned programs leading up to the Third International Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music. Co-sponsored by WSJL and Shalshelt, this Festival will be held in Milwaukee in June 2008.


Rabbi Natan Gamadze - November, 2006

Rabbi Gamedze Rabbi Natan Gamedze was in Milwaukee to talk about his spiritual and physical transformation from Prince of the African Kingdom of Swaziland to Orthodox Rabbi.

Rabbi Gamedze, who lives with his wife and children in Jerusalem, spoke about in detail about his own life story, as well as about his views on anti-Semitism. He also attended an informal discussion with Jewish students and others.
