WSJL Annual Meeting - June 24, 2007

Ellen Amster PhD, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, spoke at Cardinal Stritch University about "Saints, Sultans, and Saffron: the History and Culture of North African Jews." Guest enjoyed an authentic Moroccan luncheon.

Hazzan Ramón Tasat and Dr. Norma Brooks - March 2007

Hazzan Ramón Tasat and Dr. Norma Brooks, founders of Shalshelet - the Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music, presented a musical exploration of new Jewish liturgy, entitled Sha'arei Tefila - Gates of Prayer.

Accompanied by Hazzan Tasat on guitar, Dr. Brooks sang a variety of liturgical songs, many of them recently composed for previous Shalshelet festivals. This was the first of several programs leading up to the Third International Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music to be held in Milwaukee in June 2008.

Rabbi Natan Gamadze - November, 2006

Rabbi Natan Gamedze discussed his spiritual and physical transformation from Prince of the African Kingdom of Swaziland to Orthodox Rabbi.

Rabbi Gamedze, who lives with his wife and children in Jerusalem, spoke about in detail about his own life story, as well as about his views on anti-Semitism. He also attended an informal discussion with Jewish students and others.
